Condition: Very good plus. First edition. First impression of the beloved story of a young orphan girl sent to Prince Edward Island, Canada. Anne's story was inspired in part by Montgomery's own experience as a "charity child," left by her father in the care of her aged grandparents after her mother's death. Determined to become a writer, Montgomery nevertheless wanted to create a heroine with more spunk and passion than what she typically read - a heroine more like her view of herself. This formula proved incredibly powerful, with millions of readers who have enjoyed and related to her realistic, spirited 11-year-old. This is an especially nice copy of one of the rarest of all highspot children's books. 7.5'' x 4.75''. Original pale green cloth, gilt-lettered, pictorial paste-on. Fore-edge deckle. Illustrated with 8 plates by M.A. and W.A.J. Claus. Two publisher's catalogues at rear. x, 430, 4, 4 pages. Housed in custom gilt-lettered cloth slipcase. Hinges archivally repaired, spine slightly soiled, cover plate faintly rubbed.

hardcover. Condition: very good. First. Illustrated by M.A. and W.A.J. Claus. 8vo, pinkish gray cloth, pictorial cover label. Boston: Page, 1908. First Edition. First issue, dated April, 1908 on the copyright page, with 8 page publisher's catalogue at the rear. Variant binding, most copies being in green or tan cloth. The binding is lightly rubbed & soiled and there is an ownership signature, but this is a solid, internally fine copy of the very rare first issue of Montgomery's first novel.
Seller Image
First edition dated "April 1908" on the verso of title page. Octavo, original brown cloth, titles to the spine in gilt and front panel. Mounted pictorial label on front panel. Illustrations by M.A. and W.A.J. Claus. First edition copies are generally found in the more common green cloth bindings. (Peter Parley to Penrod, p. 124) In excellent near fine condition, showing some light wear to the extremities and front panel. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Anne (with an "e") has been stealing the hearts of readers generation after generation since it was first published in 1908. At that time, there were not many great female protaganists in novels, but there was a great audience of women readers who fell in love with this bright and extremely imaginative red-headed orphan. The book was an immediate sensation and the series followed. It's one of these most beloved girl books ever written, having sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and translated into at least 20 languages. It has also been adapted into numerous films, television series, and plays. "Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?".

Anne of Green Gables
Montgomery, L.M. (Lucy Maud)
Published by New York: L.C. Page & Company, 1908
First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. New York: L.C. Page & Company, (1908). Very Early Printing (Sixteenth Impression, December, 1909). Illustrated. Good+ in Fair Dust Jacket.Front hinge cracked else tight binding; pages pretty clean; contemporary owner's inscription on half-title page; lacking front endpaper; moderate wear; dust jacket is worn with several chips, several tears, and a little scuffing and soil; not without faults but very rare. A very early example of the great classic in dust jacket. Superlatively scarce. One of less than five copies 1909 or earlier in dust jacket we have knowledge of, only one of which appeared on the public market. That copy appeared at auction at Sotheby's in 2010 with a $20,000 to $30,000 estimate but was removed from the sale before the auction date. So no copies this early in jacket have actually been auctioned in the last 100 years. Because no copies of the first printing in dust jacket are known to exist, this is a collector's best bet for an early jacketed example. If a first printing were to surface, you'd be looking at $75,000 to $100,000+. We also have the rare first printing of Anne of the Island in dust jacket listed at this time. .

A remarkable survival of this scarce 1914 jacket that has done great service to the boards. Considerable chipping to jacket; now protected in removeable brodart archival sleeve. Apart from the chipping the jacket is whole and in one piece with no splitting at flaps. The verso of jacket lists many titles for sale "more than 400" but no L.M. Montgomery volumes. This is not a later-issue jacket: note G&D publication dates for the "Recent Issues" on rear. Presumed first Grosset edition. The boards, spine, and paper onlay are in excellent condition. Foxing to frontispiece and first 2 leaves, on the rear endpaper, and on the leaves immediately adjacent to the 3 pictorial plates. Small marginal stain at lower right of pages 111-130, 159, and a small brown dot from fore-edge from page 257-263. Front blank endpaper is lacking. Artist's book, unique, an altered book, signed by the artist on the rear pastedown, "DKrause." Page size: 5 x 8 inches; 20pp. Bound by the artist: in the original boards of a used copy of the 100th anniversary edition of this children's classic. The artist removed the covers, spine, and eight illustrations and inserted a strip of ochre leather which became the new spine. Details from the original black and white illustrations were then watercolored and placed on botanically-printed pages. The whole was then bound using original boards of anniversary edition and a slipcase made using the original spine of the book. The artist's title, ANNE with an e, is written in pencil by the artist below the cover portrait of "Anne." taken from a postcard. This altered book was occasioned by the artist's visit to Charlottetown, PEI, the setting for Montgomery's story.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good +. Eighth impression. Octavo, 429pp., illustrated, plus 8pp. of advertisements at rear. A crisp, clean, tight copy in the publisher's light brown cloth with applied illustration, very good or better. Spine very gently cocked. A few very faint dampstains to the cloth and the top edge. The majority of the front free endpaper has been excised and is not present, leaving a remnant. While disappointing, it's an otherwise much nicer than usual example, with rather bright gilt on the spine, the applied illustration well-preserved, and sharp corners. None of the usual dust-soiling or fraying at the extremities. No internal markings. Altogether quite a nice copy of an early printing of this sensational novel, an enduring classic whose title character has inspired generations of young readers. The book was reprinted endlessly in its early years, and early printings are difficult to find in attractive condition.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. viii, [2], 429 p. + 8 p. of ads. 20 cm. 24 b&w photographic plates from the lost 1919 film starring Mary Miles Minter. Cloth with pasted-on illustration. Hinges tender and front is separating a little front text block at bottom. Some edge wear and soiling. Tear at top of p. 199. Occasional thumbing and soiling to pages. This film edition is extremely rare. Stills from the 1919 film Anne of Green Gables are well-placed throughout the text in association with events in the book. The silent film version differs immensely from the original novel: it features a shotgun-wielding Anne, a skunk (an animal not found in P.E.I.), and changes to the cause of Matthew's death. Nevertheless, the film, Minter's first for director W. D. Taylor, met with great success. All prints of the film were destroyed in the aftermath, making "Anne of Green Gables" one of Hollywood's famous lost films. It was Minter's self-declared favourite role, adapted by famous female screenwriter Frances Marion. It was shot in Dedham, Massachusetts, with Green Gables represented by the Fairbanks House. Montgomery was not a fan of the film, despite its excellent reception. 49th Impression, April 1920. 349th thousand.
